  1. I would not worry about the rubber, tempatures are not that extream as to do any damage.
    As for the “milage?” even budget filters will last from 6000-10,000 miles depending on the engin and driving conditons. For gasoline engins The Oil Blotter Test will tell you if it´time to change oil, you´ll see black carbon depostits floating around inside the oil ring.

  2. You can’t really tell anything by looks. The important thing is how well the material filters out contaminants. You would have to look at the micron rating. Metal or nylon doesn’t matter its the ability to capture contaminants that matters. Look at the micron ratings.

  3. This is a very good and detailed article. Do you have any info on the Ford branded filters? How do they compare to the base price filters and the high end price filters?

    The above is all accurate as far as filter media and construction. However. One of the most important features not mentioned in these comparisons is the anti drain back valve.
